Coogee suburb profile
Located approximately 7km from the CBD, the vibrant beachside suburb of Coogee is famous for its promenade and golden arc of pristine beach.
It’s one of the earlier residential suburbs in Sydney’s south east, settled as a coastal getaway from the city back in the 1830s. A tram service was added in the early 1900s and the famous Coogee Aquarium, sadly no longer around, was built in 1929.
A popular tourist destination as well as a sought-after residential address, Coogee still retains examples of classic architecture from the Victorian, Federation and Art Deco eras, giving it its distinct charm. Many original buildings however have made way for newer boutique apartment buildings and a few beachfront high rises.
Back in the 1980s the council undertook a significant reinvention of the promenade area, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The Coogee Bay Hotel is a prominent landmark, with its live music venue, Selina’s, showcasing many successful Aussie bands during their formative years.
Coogee is home to a vast number of thriving cafes dotted all around the beachfront. Coogee Bay Road and the main beachfront drag of Arden Street are home to an array of eateries, takeaway shops, specialty stores and fast food outlets catering to the beach going crowds.
At the southern end of the beach, the recently refurbished Wylies Baths is a popular family destination, built in 1907 on the sandstone cliff face. Further along the coast you’ll find baths for women and children exclusively. The coastal walk is also a drawcard, winding through coastal reserve.
There are plenty of local recreational and sporting attractions, including Coogee Oval, used for cricket in the summer months, the Coogee Bowling Club, Randwick Rugby Club and the Randwick and Coogee Swimming Club.
The suburb is well serviced by buses taking you to various parts of Sydney, including the University of NSW, Sydney University and the Royal Hospital for Women, as well as the CBD. For sightseers, the Bay & Bondi Explorer takes you from the city via Bondi to Coogee. For all transport details in the area, visit the transport infoline website www.131500.com.au or phone 131 500.
